Smut

I had a surprise introduction to romance novels, (it was not romantic it was black lace) when I was a young teenager. I was visiting my nan in Oxford when a friend of hers dropped over a bag of old books for her to take to the charity shop. I was given first dips on the content before it was given away. Most of the books were historical fiction but one in particular had a fairly interesting blurb on the back and when I started to read it I was blown away.

I had no awareness before this, that there was this type of book, or that type of writing at all. I remember being fascinated. I read it quickly hiding the cover inside another larger book lest my nan somehow infer what I was reading, and as soon as I had finished it, I hid the book.

I cant even remember the title of the book now, I can just remember the feeling of reading this illicit story, feeling naughty, excited and not being able to put it down. The funny thing is I cant even remember the explicit sections of the book now, I can only remember half descriptions of the internal monologue of the women and a great sentence where a lady in her haste broke a nail trying to undo buttons.

I read a few other romance novels as I grew up but nothing the same as that first book, and I generally forgot about this discovery  I had made. I didn’t think that these were things that ‘normal’ people read.

Fast forward too several years later browsing youtube with my love for all things geeky and I happen across the vaginal fantasy bookclub.

(Unfortunately they no longer do this bookclub due to other commitments which is so sad.)

This was described as ‘a gathering of wine, women and smut as they discuss and dissect a new genre romance novel each month‘.

I loved this bookclub I loved how they talked through the books giggling through the saucy bits, describing who they fell in love with and in general celebrating all smut books.  What was even better in my eyes was that I found out that there are fantasy smut books and scifi smut books!

Since discovering this bookclub and realising that actually plenty of other people read smut/ romance books. I’ve never looked back, I absolutely and un-ashamedly (possibly because you cant see what i’m reading because I read them on my kindle) love reading smut books. Smut for me covers the whole spectrum from classic romance novels which are generally more about the wooing and courtship dance all the way through to erotica – obviously this is all based on what mood I am in at the time.

I love reading the emotional build up and thoughts and feelings of the characters, the way the sensations are described. Oddly enough I’m not much of a fan of romantic films but there is something about reading it that really resonates with me.

I tend to lean towards fantasy or scifi ‘romance’ I think because I prefer that type of writing generally but also because it can add an interesting flavour to the romance when you have descriptions of magic or technology to tease and explore.

romance

At some point I definitely want to give writing a smut (romance) novel a go its on my bucket list. However, I also think its very hard to be a good smut writer.

You have to be very good at the description of thoughts and feelings and connections. Really be able to bring to life lust and longing, and ultimately you have to be able to successfully describe the human anatomy in an interesting and romantic way.

I get really annoyed at authors who have got this down but then put these amazing lustful, emotional, sexy scenes in a really flat plot, to me a good smut novel has to also be an interesting novel have a story and full characters. To be fair maybe i’m asking for a lot but there are fantastic smut books out there.

What are your thoughts on romance novels? Is this something you indulge in – or have you not got to grips with this genre?
